How long do you have to be married to get a pension?

In order to be entitled to a widow’s or widower’s pension under the statutory pension insurance (GRV), you must have been married for at least one year. In this way, the SPS wants to prevent couples from taking out short-term cover at the expense of the pension insurance, for example in the case of a serious illness. Different rules apply to civil servants’ pensions or private insurance.
