What is cold and warm rent?

In Germany, tenants pay a basic rent known as a “Kaltmiete” (cold rent) as well as additional costs. The additional costs, warm rent, called “Nebenkosten”, can include heating costs, water and sewage and waste disposal. A “Warmmiete” (warm rent) is the total sum of the basic rent plus additional costs.
