Tax classes in Germany

There are a total of 6 tax classes based on your life- and professional situation.

Tax class 1: for singles.

Tax class 2: for single parents.

Tax class 3: Married and the high earner of both. The other one will get Tax class 5.

Tax class 4: Married and the standard case. If one partner does not work, or both have an equal income.

Tax class 5: Married and the low earner of both. The other one will get Tax class 3.

Tax class 6: Several jobs subject to social security contributions. Used if you have a second job with income tax.
