When was pension insurance introduced?

The origins of our pension insurance date back to 1889. Much has happened since then as a result of two world wars, the division and subsequent reunification of Germany. Several pension reforms and the merger of the German pension providers through the organisational reform have led to today’s pension insurance. Politicians are currently discussing whether to introduce compulsory contributions for all gainfully employed persons, including self-employed persons and civil servants. (Status 2021)
